What is Personal Growth?

Personal growth is the idea that you can become the best version of yourself in all aspects of life. From mental health, physical health and emotional health. Imagine if you had daily feelings of fulfillment from yourself and the life that surrounds you.

“It is not a 30 day miracle diet”

It is a journey to start for yourself that will help you become a better provider, parent, partner, coworker etc.

When you start to be a priority in your own life and present yourself as you want and not from what others want, you will start to reduce stress and anxiety in your life. What you would do to please others, might be a simple “no” and you won’t think twice about it.

Why is Personal Growth important?

In every moment of our lives, we often seek to better ourselves or just to understand who we are. As children, we start to question the world around us, adding on more and more things that make us happy. As a teenager, you start to realize there might be better ways to do things, but nothing seems to add up, especially when you compare your life to others. Did you even start to question your parents and other authority figures in your life?

When you become an adult, it seems like the world opens up to you, but wait until you have a family, responsibilities, children or other obligations. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day and forget who you are. Were you able to accomplish what you wanted or are you telling yourself you still have time to do it later?

Some benefits to work on your personal growth:

  • Reduce Stress and Anxiety
  • Reduce Anger
  • Increase your willingness to take on tasks
  • Increase mindfulness
  • Ability to learn new things
  • Being more positive

Are you a priority in your own life?

If you said no, or maybe thought of your children and family and told yourself, that you don’t have time for this. Stick around!

If you are on an airplane, you should put on your mask first and then help others. If this sounds crazy, well it’s time to start finding what are your priorities and what you want.

The 5 Aspects of Personal Growth

Our day-to-day lives are busier than ever, or we make it that way. It’s easy to say no to yourself for other engagements. No matter what age you are, it’s never too late to grow and learn. You just have to allow yourself to do so.

If you are ready to start on your journey, here are the 5 aspects to work on:

  1. Mental Growth
  2. Social Growth
  3. Spiritual Growth
  4. Emotional Growth
  5. Physical Growth

You might have been told by adults, authority figures and peers that the way you behaved was wrong. Take a child, for example, how many times per day can they hear sentences like: “Stop acting that way, behave yourself etc.” Does all this change the way they should be? Can you think of an event in your life that might have changed how you behave?

How to get started – Easy Exercise to See What You Want!

Do you want to discover what your true goals are and don’t know how? You are in charge of your life, of your personal growth, that is why it’s so important. You need to take action, every day!

I am not talking about general goals like “I want to lose 20 lbs”, this is more in-depth, allowing you to dig deep within yourself to make you see who you want to be.

If you are still reading this, you might be realizing that you are not sure what you want out of life or that you have lost yourself in the life you built for yourself and your family.

Don’t be alarmed. You are not the only one, and realizing that you might not be where you want to be is okay. If you know you want something else but aren’t sure what exactly, start with the exercise below.

Try the following exercise:

  1. Get a blank piece of paper
  2. Write the title Don’t Want
  3. Set a timer for 5 minutes
  4. Write down everything you don’t want in your life (no judgment)
  5. When the timer is done, circle the top 5 that mean more to you
  6. Write the top 5 below
  7. At the bottom of the page, or on the other side, take your top 5 and transform it into something you Do Want

For example:

  • I don’t want to not have time for myself. I want to schedule time daily for me.
  • I don’t want to be pushed around by others, I want to make decisions that make me happy.

This exercise will help you dig deep and realize what are your goals in your personal growth, and what you have to work on to get what you truly want.

The idea here is to make you realize that you are allowed to make changes in the way you are around others, the decisions you make and the way you present yourself to be who you want to be. It doesn’t mean you have to be angry or just blindly say “no” to everything.

There is a difference between saying yes to help someone because you truly want to and saying yes because you don’t want to and feel obligated.

Tips for Success

  • Start by doing one small action at a time (you can refer to the 9 ideas below)

  • Avoid doing too much too soon (one step at a time, one day at a time)
  • Be patient
  • Accept that not every day will be perfect (life is an up-and-down journey, a bad event doesn’t always equal a bad day)
  • The more you see yourself as the authority in your own life, the better your decision-making will be
  • Be proud of the small changes (reflection or journaling is a great idea to see how much you are improving)
  • It will feel weird, but trust that it’s what you need
